Every Drop Counts
Clean water is a right, not a privilege. The Kulubiliga River runs through most of the district's settlements, and many residents depend on it for drinking water. But dependence on surface water — especially during the long dry season — brings risks of waterborne disease and long, strenuous journeys to collect water.
With a semi-arid climate, the district's rivers and streams dry up during the dry months, making reliable boreholes and mechanised systems essential for year-round water security.
15 New Boreholes Underway
The Assembly has made significant strides. Most recently, the Hon. MP and the DCE broke ground for the construction of 15 new boreholes to improve access to safe drinking water and reduce the burden on communities that continue to rely on inadequate or unsafe sources.
Alongside these, the SOCO project has supported the construction of mechanised boreholes for farming, addressing both domestic and agricultural water needs.
Sanitation: A Clean Talensi

- Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) programmes to end open defecation.
- Environmental Health and Sanitation services sensitising communities on keeping surroundings clean.
- Promotion of proper solid and liquid waste disposal practices to reduce disease.
Why Water & Sanitation Matter
Safe water and good sanitation are directly linked to health. Reductions in diarrhoeal diseases and waterborne illness ease the burden on health facilities and keep children in school and parents at work. For women and girls, who often bear the water-collection burden, reliable water means time and dignity returned to them.
The projects are intended to improve access to safe drinking water and reduce the burden on communities relying on inadequate or unsafe sources.
Way Forward
The Works Department and Environmental Health Unit continue to accelerate the provision of affordable, safe water and to drive sanitation programmes in partnership with communities, ensuring no household is left behind.
