Livelihoods and a Living Land
Talensi is rich in gold, and artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) provides vital livelihoods for many residents. But mining also brings real challenges: land degradation, the repulsion of land through quarrying and sand winning, potential water contamination, and the pull of children out of school.
The Assembly's approach is one of balance — sustaining the mining economy while fiercely protecting the environment and the people who depend on it.
The Blue Water Guards: A Landmark Step
In a landmark move, the Talensi District Assembly successfully inaugurated the Talensi District Blue Water Guards — a significant milestone in the district's collective efforts to protect its water bodies and promote responsible environmental stewardship. The guards work alongside the Assembly and partners to prevent illegal mining and pollution of rivers such as the Kulubiliga.
Working With Mining Companies
The Assembly engages major mining companies — such as Earl, whose corporate social responsibility focuses on Health, Water & Sanitation, Education, and Social Support — to channel benefits of the mining economy into community development.
The Greening Talensi Initiative
As a geographer, the DCE understands the fragility of the environment. "Greening Talensi" is prosecuted from different angles:
- Tree planting in and around schools, partnered with school authorities.
- Forest brigades (employed through YEA) to protect existing vegetation via fire belts.
- Limiting the use of wood as fuel at home and preventing the felling of rosewood in the forest.
- Partnerships with World Vision Ghana to replicate their afforestation models of acacia trees planted in Namoalug and Tongo Beo.
Protecting Water, Protecting Health
Study after study confirms that while Talensi's groundwater is generally good, localized contamination from ASGM can pose health risks — particularly for children. That is why monitoring, pollution control and the Blue Water Guards are so essential, working with the Environmental Protection Agency and Ghana Water Company to ensure mining does not compromise water security.
Protecting our water is protecting our future. The Blue Water Guards are the sentinels of our rivers.
